Incredible early 1920s hand crocheted gown featuring rosette appliqués along the drop waist. The crochet is reminiscent of filet lace, with intricate floral and web-like motifs woven throughout, and lays symmetrical on the body. Made of cotton thread, the crochet remains remarkably strong and intact, uncommon for such a delicate, labor-intensive textile from this era. The integrity of the dress speaks to the quality of the workmanship and the care it has received over time. The contrasting fabric shows more noticeable wear, with areas of deterioration along the sleeves and hem. If deterioration continues this can be removed or easily replaced, but as of now is still strong enough to wear with care. There are also some areas with discoloration, as pictured.
